Action Instead of Climate Anxiety – Children and Young People Leading the Way

""

Welcome to a discussion on the well-being of children and young people in the age of climate crisis. Ira Vihreälehto, Executive Director of the Association for Cultural Heritage Education in Finland, will present the 70 Adventures Before Grade 7 challenge, Finland’s nominee for the 2026 Nordic Council Environment Prize.

How do children and young people navigate alarming news and polarised debates about the climate? How can adults support their well-being in the age of climate crisis, and what tools are available for environmental education, even for the youngest children?

Ira Vihreälehto, Executive Director of the Association for Cultural Heritage Education in Finland, represents the 70 Adventures Before Grade 7 challenge, Finland’s nominee for the 2026 Nordic Council Environment Prize. The discussion also features Salla Veijonaho, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki, and Santeri Sammalkivi, a student of environmental sciences and law at the University of Helsinki. The discussion will be moderated by Emma Palojärvi, an expert for the Norden 0–30 funding programme at Nordic Culture Point. The discussion will be held in Finnish.

The Nordic Council Environment Prize will be awarded on 20 October 2026. The prize amounts to DKK 300,000 (approximately EUR 40,000). This year, the prize recognises initiatives that strengthen environmental and climate education for children and young people. The prize jury cites the 70 Adventures Before Grade 7 challenge for making environmental education tangible by shifting the focus from theory to hands-on experiences and sustainable everyday actions, with children themselves taking an active role.

The discussion can also be followed online via a live stream on this website.
