Artist Talk: Imagination to disrupt linearity: Conversation between Carla Tapparo and Melike İșleyen

""

Welcome to an Artist Talk with artist Carla Tapparo (SAR) where she and researcher Melike İșleyendiscuss artistic- and working methods. Free admission.

In this Artist Talk, artist Carla Tapparo will be in conversation with researcher Melike İșleyen about their methods practices. Warmly welcome to join the discussion at our Nordic Library in Kaisaniemi or online. Free entry.

The conversation between the artist and the researcher will focus in how art as a methodology, a way of engaging with the world, can insist on creating disruptive narratives and bridges between timespaces and practices. The artist’s current research on knots, time and the ocean, that started through her involvement in civil Search and Rescue in the Mediterranean, as well as her previous work will be the anchor used for these drifts.

About the speakers:

Carla Tapparo (she/her) is a transdisciplinary artist currently based in Italy. She holds a Bachelor’s and a Professor’s degree in Fine Arts from Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a Master of Arts in the Public Sphere, summa cum laude, from édhèa, Switzerland, supported by the Hans Boerg Wyss Scholarship. Her work has been exhibited and performed in Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, and Ireland, and she has taken part in several international residency programmes, including Frankfurt Moves! (2022) and the Global Forest Residency in the Black Forest (2024).

She has also worked as Art Director for the children’s animation show Lihuén (Micelio Studio, Argentina), which aired on the national channel Paka Paka and received multiple awards in her home country. Through her involvement in LDSP open-source software, she has published papers and led workshops at conferences such as NIME and DAFx, as well as in non-academic settings, including the Hackn3t Residency by AKC Attack in Croatia.

Melike İşleyen has a background in counselling psychology and trauma-centred mental health. During their second Master’s degree in Ethnicity and Migration Studies, their focus expanded from psychotherapeutic approaches to healing towards an understanding of healing, visual cultures, and justice as interconnected processes, closely tied to modern colonial power structures and gendered, racialised capitalism.

They are now pursuing a PhD in Norway, where their dissertation examines visual cultures of violence, resistance, and re-existence in Palestine. Their research investigates how artists and filmmakers challenge the aesthetic order of modernity, the modern colonial ‘I’, and the settler-colonial logic of elimination through images and narratives that open up space for affective encounters and coalitional resistance for social and environmental justice.

Carla Tapparo’s stay at Residency B28 is co-funded by the European Union through the Creative Europe programme as part of the project Island Connect II.
