THE RAT AND THE HORSE WHO COULDN’T THROW UP

""

The residency is a collaboration between the performers Corinne Mustonen (FI) and Simon Chatelain (FR), and sound designer Vili Pääkkö (FI).

Vili and Corinne have been collaborating since 2020, and have since then created the performances ISH, I Samma Hudsäck and Copy pasta cut, that have been performed at Tictac Art Center, Luckan Helsinki, La Mercerie, VTT and University of Tampere. Vili makes sounds, Corinne makes dances. Combined they often become performances.

They decided to invite the French dancer Simon Chatelain, a member of the collective Useless Machines (Swe), after Corinne met them dancing at the Topfloor Festival in Brussels last summer, to create a dance performance together. The group works in English, Swedish, Finnish and French.

The residency at Nordic Culture Point residency is the first working period of their upcoming performance:

THE RAT AND THE HORSE WHO COULDN`T THROW UP

The performance is a faked fable, a made-up story, expressed through the abstract and eternal mediums dance and sound. The residency is a deep dive into narration, exploring the morals and moods of Nordic tales, Scandinavian Folklore, ghost stories and horror movies, to create a rhythmically unconventional and untimely dance-fable.

The performance is a gentle revolution of storytelling, in which it doesn’t really matter where the story started and where it is to end, or how things went about, or who was in it and who should’ve been in it. The fable emerges through loops of restless galloping, moralizing, hustling and spiraling. Welcome to a hysterical, tender, associative adventure that goes way beyond the pre-booked lawn outside our performance space.
Don’t be afraid, after all the jump scares and sparse jumps,
it’s a simple story with a few funky characters, and an important lesson to learn.

The collaboration is prolonged, extending over in residencies in Finland, Belgium and France, as Corinne, Simon and Vili have a shared desire for a long-term international artistic dialogue. All three of them freelance in many different companies and constellations, therefore, whenever they meet, their corporealities are stained with endless new tales to tell.
