Several smaller and a few larger projects are included in the list of 37 projects granted funding. A total of 229 applications were submitted, resulting in an approval rate of 16 percent. In terms of the amount of funding applied for, the approval rate was 15 percent, with almost EUR 1.2 million granted out of the EUR 7.9 applied for.
Art reflects society
Gunnar Karel Másson sees some clear trends in the Nordic art and culture scene.
“In addition to climate issues and sustainability in general, queer topics, sexual identity, inclusion, and the creation of safe spaces are recurring themes. However, topics like these mustn’t seem forced or artificial. A project may carry a socially relevant theme, but it must also have a strong artistic integrity and quality,” he says.
He adds that the applications also reflect the need for art on its own terms.
“We’re continuing to see project applications that are simply about making art, or projects that aim to initiate research,” Gunnar notes.
