Seminar: From Fairy Tales to Social Media – Children’s and Youth Literature in the Media

The focus of IBBY Finland’s annual seminar on 7 November will be on the role of children’s and youth literature in society and the media. This free seminar is aimed at anyone who works with or has an interest in children’s and young adult literature.

During the seminar, we’ll discuss activities in the field of children’s and youth literature to understand more about the potential, the possibilities, and the stakeholders involved. The seminar is aimed at all professionals in the field of children’s and young adult literature and education, those interested in children’s and young adult literature, and parents of children.

The event will be streamed on Library Channel, with the exception of the ‘Write your own review’ workshop that will conclude the event. Recordings will also be made for later viewing.

A maximum of 12 people can participate in the workshop, with separate registration required by 17 October (more information below).

Seminar programme:

  • 9:00 Morning coffee
  • 9:30 Opening words
  • 9:40 Panel discussion
    • The panellists will discuss different perspectives on the associations’ activities, successes, challenges, opportunities, and dreams for the future. The discussion will take place in Finnish and Swedish.
    • Panel participants: Ilmi Villacís from The Union of Finnish Writers, Asta Boman from Kuvittajat ry, Henrika Andersson from Fibul, and Emmi Jäkkö from The Finnish Reading Center. The discussion will be led by children’s and youth literature researcher, Dr. Myry Voipio from Lastenkirjainstituutti.
  • 10:40 Speaker: Dr. Riie Heikkilä
    • “Children are reading less and differentiation in reading among different groups is growing: how should we understand children’s reading against this background?”
  • 11:40 Lunch break (at own expense) and coffee service.
  • 12:40 Speaker: Tammi resident writer, performance dramaturg, and verbal arts educator Siri Kolu
    • “Children’s revolution! – how can the lessons learnt from kindergarten Kanuuna capture more media space for children’s and young adult literature?”
  • 13:40 Introductory speech: Päivi Heikkilä-Halttunen, children’s and young adult literature critic, researcher and non-fiction writer
    • “Tip, repost, recommendation, or review? Children’s and young adult books can be made visible in many ways and on different platforms.”
  • 14:10 End of live broadcast.
  • 14:15-15:15: Workshop: ‘Write your own review’. Led by Päivi Heikkilä-Halttunen, children’s and young adult literature critic, researcher, and non-fiction writer.
    • The review workshop will focus on writing a review of a children’s or young adult book. A maximum of 12 people can participate in the workshop.

The event is organised by Nordic Culture Point in collaboration with IBBY Finland.

Registration for the workshop ‘Write your own review’

Register by sending an e-mail to paivi.heikkilahalttunen@gmail.com by 17 October. Explain briefly in the e-mail why you want to participate in the workshop.

Each workshop participant must write a review of a new children’s or young adult book before the workshop (choose either a children’s novel or a young adult novel from a list that will be circulated among the workshop participants). Send your review to Päivi Heikkilä-Halttunen by 31 October. The reviews will be used anonymously in the workshop to illustrate the structure of a review and different ways to approach a book. More detailed instructions will be sent to workshop participants.
