“Hoggeren” (The Tree Feller) is a dark, humorous, and tender depiction of Anders’ attempts to reset his life. Feeling that he’s lost everything that matters, he returns to his hometown of Hallingdal in Norway and moves into the small farm he inherited from his parents. Using an axe and his muscle power, Anders spends his days chopping down trees in his forest, but he’s no lumberjack. There is no plan in what he does other than to find peace in nature and give himself over to physical work. This idyll is quickly shattered when he meets his relatives.

Director and screenwriter Jorunn Myklebust Syversen (NO) is herself from the place where the film is set, and many of the characters are played by Syversen’s own relatives. She is interested in how we encounter people in difficult situations and our responsibility for ourselves when life hits us the hardest.

Language: Norwegian, with English subtitles
Length: 82 minutes
