The NABO exhibition

Trust your neighbour – welcome to a democracy workshop

In connection with the Visit Nabo Art Book exhibition, we would like to invite you and your class to participate in a democracy workshop. Inspired by the exhibition, participants are tasked with identifying a societal issue related to democracy, participation, and the opportunities for young people to make their voices heard. The pupils will then explore potential solutions to the issues they have identified.

During the visit, we will also provide information regarding funding opportunities for youth projects that focus on similar societal themes.

The short exhibition texts are primarily in English. When registering, please indicate whether you would like the workshop to be held in Finnish, Swedish, or English. We can also conduct the workshop multilingually if requested. Please note that the walk from the main pier of Suomenlinna to Nordic Culture Point takes approximately 10–15 minutes.

For more information and to register for the workshop, please contact Library Developer Salomon Hellman at salomon.hellman@nkk.org.

About the exhibition

The Visit Nabo Artbook is an exhibition that provides a platform for dialogue about democracy, participation, and the opportunities for young people to make their voices heard. Taking young people’s perspectives as the point of departure, the exhibition highlights questions of community, responsibility, and how people – and countries – encounter one another.

The name Nabo comes from an Old Norse word meaning neighbour and is used here as a symbol of togetherness and mutual responsibility in the Nordic Region. In the exhibition, you’ll encounter illustrations by eight Nordic artists who, in different ways, interpret young people’s experiences, voices, and living environments across the Nordics. The images portray joy and boredom, anxiety and hope, frustration and agency – but above all the right to be seen, heard, and taken seriously.

The exhibition is based on a four-year project on young people’s social inclusion carried out by the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society (MUCF). The project’s research reports were compiled into a book, the content of which has here been given a new spatial and visual form. The exhibition is accompanied by educational material in the form of the Nabo Artbook and dialogue cards linked to the exhibition, offering visitors and groups the opportunity to explore the themes and visual worlds in greater depth.

This exhibition is produced by the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society, with funding from the Nordic Council of Ministers.
