The project culminated in two performances: one in Iceland on May 10,
2024, and another in Finland on October 4. During their visits, the
young dancers participated in joint projects, exploring local dance
culture both as creators and as viewers. They also had the opportunity
to experience local food and environments, enhancing the cultural
exchange.
One of the most impactful aspects of Sensing North was the chance for
young people from different countries to connect and work together on a
shared creative project. Dance became the common language, allowing them to break down barriers of language and culture. The embodied nature of the project facilitated low-threshold opportunities for connection and collaboration.

In Finland, the Icelandic and Finnish dancers attended a rehearsal of
the Helsinki City Theatre dance group and watched the premiere of Birth
by Susanna Leinonen Dance Company at the Dance House. They also explored Helsinki’s built environment, shaping it with their own movements, while practicing in Raasepori’s local theatre space.
Despite limited time and resources, the participants successfully
completed two video projects during their visits. The first was filmed
in Iceland, and the second in Finland. This process was challenging but
rewarding, highlighting the creativity and commitment of all involved.
The project not only encouraged personal growth but also fostered
connections that could lead to lifelong friendships. By engaging in
creative processes, the young participants gained confidence and
developed new perspectives, enhancing their sense of Nordic identity.
The project highlighted shared cultural traits across the Nordic
countries while celebrating the unique differences that make each
culture special.
Ultimately, Sensing North helped bridge cultural gaps, deepening the
young people’s understanding of their Nordic community based on shared
values of equality, openness, and cultural diversity. Through this
collaboration, they were able to see themselves as part of a dynamic,
evolving Nordic culture, enriched by their personal experiences and
collective creativity.
